Sunday School and Bible Study

Let the children come to me Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
(Matthew 19:14)

Why are Sunday School and Adult Bible Classes important?  In Section 104 of Chapter 9 of the Book of Concord, Martin Luther preached on March 25, 1529 that religion “ought not only to move us older ones, but also the young and the children. Therefore you parents ought to instruct and educate them in the doctrine of the Lord.”

A more contemporary viewpoint is provided by  Howard Hendricks who wrote in a 2006 article for Christianity Today that Christian education is designed to provide a transcendental experience.  “The secularist seeks to make better, more effective, successful, and intelligent people. The Christian educator aspires to nothing less than to transform people into the image of Christ. Secular education and Christian education thus have different postures toward the world. One helps a person fit into the world system; the other helps lift a person above the world. I am teaching not merely to inform the mind but to renew the mind.”
